    A pair of 2-armed brass sphinx candelabra of the early 19th century. Upon each rectangular marble base sits a recumbent sphinx, issuing two scrolled branches with round drip pans and candle holders. Five French icicles hang from each drip pan.

    Restoration by G&P Cohn

    Hand cleaned in the workshop; brasswork lightly polished and reassembled on the marble bases.

    Condition

    Sound and complete. Marble bases intact; French icicles retained on each drip pan.

    Our Opinion

    A pair in the Egyptian taste that followed the Napoleonic campaigns, small in scale but faithful in the modelling of the sphinx. Suited to a mantel, side table or library where the detail can be read at close quarters.
