Earlier this month, we had the pleasure of restoring the sparkle to a magnificent Maria Theresa chandelier in a beautiful period property in Pimlico, London. This elegant chandelier — a true centrepiece of the room — had gradually lost its lustre due to accumulated dust and airborne particles. Our job was to bring back its brilliance.
About the Chandelier
Maria Theresa chandeliers are among the most opulent lighting fixtures ever created, named after the 18th-century Empress of Austria. They're known for their curved glass arms, ornate detailing, and lavish use of hand-cut crystal drops.
This particular piece, featuring dozens of crystal rosettes, almond drops, and decorative swags, had been in place for many years — but time had dulled its shine.
Our Cleaning Process
We take a traditional and careful approach to chandelier cleaning, especially for historical or delicate pieces like this one. Here's how we handled this project:
- Protection & Prep: We first ensured the area was fully protected, including flooring and furnishings, to create a clean and safe working space.
- Disassembly: Each crystal was carefully unhooked, labelled, and cleaned individually by hand using a non-ammonia crystal-safe solution.
- Deep Clean & Polish: We meticulously cleaned each element — from crystal to frame — restoring clarity and brilliance throughout.
- Reassembly & Testing: Once fully cleaned, the chandelier was reassembled and electrically tested to ensure all bulbs and connections were operating safely.
The Result - Before & After
The transformation was immediate and dramatic. The chandelier now gleams in the ambient light, creating stunning reflections on the ceiling and walls. It’s not just a light source — it's a work of art once more.
