Chandelier Cleaning in Mayfair: Restoring an Early 1800s French Leaded Glass Chandelier

We were recently invited to a property in Mayfair, London, to carry out a detailed chandelier cleaning on a spectacular French chandelier dating from the early 1800s. This impressive antique featured delicate leaded glass paired with a finely crafted gilded frame, showcasing the elegance and craftsmanship of early 19th-century French design.

Because of its age, construction, and the fragility of the materials, this chandelier needed extremely careful handling. The combination of leaded glass and original gilding meant it could not be dismantled, making an on-site cleaning the safest and most conservation-friendly approach.

Working carefully in situ, we cleaned the chandelier section by section. Each piece of leaded glass was gently polished using specialist solutions designed for antique crystal, lifting years of dust while preserving its clarity and sparkle. The gilded frame was cleaned using techniques that protect and respect historical finishes, ensuring no loss of the original gilding.

When the work was complete, the chandelier’s transformation was remarkable. Light once again refracted beautifully through the restored leaded glass, and the gilded frame glowed with warmth and depth — reinstating the chandelier as the proud centrepiece of the Mayfair residence.
