    A large French cage chandelier of the mid-19th century, dressed in the typical French manner with plaque drops, half-moon drops, coloured bubbles and fruit drops. The cage form carries generous spikes to the arms, matched to the length of the French candles for which it was originally intended.

    Catalogue Notes

    • Twelve arms with cut nozzles and pans, each adorned with French fruit plaques
    • Cage dressed with plaque drops, half-moon drops and fruit drops
    • Central finial rising into the middle of the cage
    • Two-tier top section, the upper tier finished with a coloured bubble
    • Of a scale suited to rooms of generous proportion

    Restoration by G&P Cohn

    Dismantled, hand cleaned and re-strung. Missing drops replaced from period stock where necessary; frame checked and reassembled.

    Electrification —Rewired to current UK standards; can be adapted for candle use on request.

    Condition

    Restored and rewired. Original glass dressing largely intact; brass frame sound.

    Our Opinion

    A cage chandelier of substantial scale, uncommon in this size. The dressing is characteristic of French work of the period, and the coloured bubble to the upper tier is a distinctive feature. Best suited to a room where the cage can be read in full from below.
