    The Project

We were recommended by an antique lighting dealer to assist a client in Camden, London, who had purchased a bell lantern and required it to be professionally installed.

During the same project, the client also asked us to modify and re-electrify an older alabaster bowl chandelier, converting it from a single light source to three lights and improving its suspension arrangement.

The work involved a combination of careful workshop modification and electrification, followed by the installation of both fittings at the client's property.

Workshop Electrification of the Alabaster Chandelier

The alabaster chandelier originally had a single light source and was suspended using its electrical cable in a rope-style arrangement.

The client wanted the chandelier converted to accommodate three lights, which required alterations to both the electrification and the method of suspension.

The chandelier was brought to our workshop, where we modified the decorative crown by fitting three hooks. Three suspension chains were then attached between the crown and the alabaster bowl, providing a separate mechanical suspension arrangement rather than relying on the electrical cable.

The chandelier was re-electrified to accommodate three light sources, with the electrical cables carefully routed upwards alongside the suspension chains and through the decorative crown.

This arrangement allowed the electrical wiring to be incorporated discreetly into the chandelier while retaining the appearance of the original alabaster bowl and decorative metalwork.

    Installation in Camden

Once the workshop modifications and electrification were completed, the alabaster chandelier was transported back to the client's property in Camden.

An existing plastic globe ceiling light was removed to make way for the restored and re-electrified alabaster chandelier.

The chandelier was then installed in its new position, with its three-light arrangement providing illumination through the alabaster bowl.

During the same visit, we also installed the bell lantern that the client had purchased from the antique lighting dealer.

The lantern was fitted in another room, completing the installation of both pieces of decorative lighting.

    The Finished Result

The completed project brought two different styles of period lighting into use within the property.

The alabaster bowl chandelier retained its decorative character while benefiting from a revised suspension arrangement and three-light electrification.

The bell lantern was also installed in its intended location, completing the work originally requested following the dealer's recommendation.

This project illustrates how sympathetic chandelier electrification can combine practical modifications with respect for the original appearance of an older fitting.
