Can a Chandelier Be Cleaned Without Taking It Down?

The area beneath the fitting is fully protected with dust sheets and access equipment is positioned carefully before any work starts. Where the piece has removable parts, those are taken down first and cleaned individually at floor level, which is both safer and more thorough. The remaining frame, arms and pans are then cleaned by hand in position, each element addressed individually and returned to its original sequence.

The visit finishes with the removable parts refitted and checked, drops that had worked loose reattached, and an electrical check and lamping.

In-situ cleaning suits pieces that are sound, reasonably accessible and simply dirty — the most common case being a chandelier that has taken on a film of atmospheric dust. It also suits fittings whose components cannot be removed at all, where working carefully in position is the only correct option.

It avoids disconnection and transport, and it means a single visit rather than a piece being away from the house.

Where a chandelier needs repair as well as cleaning, where its wiring is suspect, or where its construction is complex or fragile enough to need unhurried attention, workshop cleaning is the sounder option. That judgement is made after looking at the piece, not before.

Two traditional crystal chandeliers were cleaned entirely in place in Holland Park and Southend, with every crystal cleaned by hand in position and no drop removed from its original sequence. In Lancaster Gate two very large Venetian chandeliers were cleaned largely in situ, with only the removable upper and lower glass crooks brought down to floor level.

In-situ cleaning is work at height above hard floors and furniture, carried out with proper access equipment and, where the fitting is high or heavy, more than one person. It is not something to attempt from a domestic step ladder.
