Should Chandelier Crystals Be Removed for Cleaning?

A drop cleaned at floor level can be handled properly on both faces, and cleaning it there means less detailed work at height. Where a chandelier's dressing can be removed safely, the pieces are methodically removed and catalogued, cleaned individually and thoroughly, then refitted and checked. On large glass chandeliers the removable upper and lower crooks come down for exactly this reason.

A dressed chandelier is an arrangement, not just a set of parts. Drops are graded by size and cut, and hooks and pins fatigue with age. On many pieces the right approach is to clean each drop in position, preserving the dressing as found and reattaching only those that have worked loose. Where components cannot be removed at all, in-situ hand cleaning is the only correct option.

Where dressing does come off in quantity, it is photographed and labelled component by component before removal so that the original arrangement can be reproduced exactly. On a Maria Theresa chandelier with Strass crystal in Twickenham, each drop was cleaned in position and the dressing preserved as found. On two very large Venetian chandeliers in Lancaster Gate, the removable glass crooks were brought to floor level and cleaned individually while the fixed frames and arms were cleaned in position — both decisions taken piece by piece rather than by rule.

Stripping the dressing from a chandelier is easy; putting it back correctly is not, and lost or muddled drops on an antique fitting are rarely straightforward to replace. If a piece is dressed, valuable or unfamiliar, ask before you start.
